Vodacom Blue Bulls u21 for Border Bulldogs clash
Vodacom Blue Bulls Under-21 star Ulrich Beyers is back in the team that will play the Border Bulldogs in Pretoria on Friday.
Beyers, who have scored 43 points in the Absa Under-21 Provincial Championships this far, was named in the side to play Toyota Free State last weekend, but was recalled to the Blue Bulls Currie Cup squad after a flu virus forced some withdrawals in the senior team.
Beyers will play outside centre, with new captain Courtnall Skosan reverting back to the wing in place of Damian van Wyk, who drops out of the match 22 altogether.
Skosan takes over the captaincy from Wiaan Liebenberg, who will play off the bench as Coach Nollis Marais is using his rotation policy for the first time this season.
Liebenberg swop places with Cloete Wessels, as does Tony Jantjies with Tian Schoeman, with the latter starting at 10.
Schalk van Heerden (lock) and Du Toit Genis (prop) will make their first appearance for the season, as will Andile Jho, who is on the bench.
Marais made it clear that he is expecting the newcomers to deliver.
“We lost to Border in the first round, so there are no chance of us under-estimating them. I have given some new players a chance and I hope they use their opportunities to put pressure on the incumbents.”
The Blue Bulls are top of the log, but Marais is not satisfied.
“It does show some reward for our efforts this far, but we are not close to playing the perfect match yet. The challenge will be to deliver an 80 minute performance on Friday.”
The team to play Border at Loftus B on 31 August at 16h45 is:
Riaan Britz, Courtnall Skosan (Capt), Ulrich Beyers, Jan Serfontein, Craig Pheiffer, Tian Schoeman, Lohan Jacobs, Jean Cook (v/c), Cloete Wessels, Shaun Adendorff, Marvin Orie, Schalk van Heerden, Hencus van Wyk, Jaco Visagie, Du Toit Genis.
Replacements: Jason Thomas, Basil Short, Mike Williams, Wiaan Liebenberg, Xander Redelinghuys, Tony Jantjies, Andile Jho/ Christopher Bosch.
