The South African Rugby Union (SARU) on Thursday announced the draw for the annual Southern Sub Union Tournament which takes place in Port Shepstone from the 12 – 17 September 2010.

Teams participating in this competition include Boland, Border, Eastern Province, Free State, Griqualand West, South Western Districts, Western Province and hosts Kwazulu Natal.

Springbok winger Jongi Nokwe who currently represents the Vodacom Free State Cheetahs in the Absa Currie Cup and Springbok Sevens flyer Ryno Benjamin have both previously competed in the Southern Sub Union tournaments.

“The Sub Union tournaments is a development initiative which started many years ago and it is important that we at the South African Rugby Union continue to host tournaments and competitions like this as it affords us the opportunity to view our rugby talent from the rural and country side areas,” said Mervin Green, SARU Manager of Playing the Game.

“Players representing their unions at the Sub Union tournaments are guys who do not get opportunities to compete in the SAA Club Champs or in the Absa Currie Cup. These players are normally competing in the second and third division leagues at their respective unions.

“There have also been players during the last few years that have come from these tournaments and have represented various teams in our domestic competitions such as the Vodacom Cup and even the Absa Currie Cup.

“We at SARU need to grow the game and have to continuously ensure that we take rugby to the remote areas in South Africa.”
