The STEVAL PUMAS kicked off their 2014 Vodacom Cup campaign against the Valke at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Friday.

The PUMAS were on the attack from the word go and spent quality time in the Valke’s 25m area. JC Roos added the first points to the score line when he kick a penalty after just 3 minutes on the match clock.

The PUMAS remained on the attack after the restart but struggled to get across the try-line for almost 15 minutes before Trompie Pretorius went over for his first of two tries in the match.

The game was filled with blown opportunities, bad scrums and dodgy penalties. The STEVALPUMAS managed to only secure four points on the log by beating the Valke in the end 26-6.
The head coach of the PUMAS, Jimmy Stonehouse said that the team missed out on a lot of scoring opportunities and made too many mistakes. Jimmy and the team were disappointed to leave the Barnard stadium without the very important bonus point, but at the same time felt happy with the win and remarked that it’s been while since the boys played competitive rugby, so one can expect mistakes and match day sharpness.

The highlight of the match was undoubtedly the two tries by PUMAS winger Trompie Pretorius. JC Roos added to his points tally by converting the two tries and four penalties.

Stonehouse and his squad are looking forward to the 1st home game of the season this weekend against the Vodacom Blue Bulls at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.
