RugbyWA and the Insurance Commission of Western Australia (Insurance Commission) have embarked on a new partnership to promote the state wide ‘Belt Up’ campaign.

The campaign aims to raise awareness of road safety and reduce the number of incidents on the road within the community.

Two million dollars of funding will be allocated across Rugby WA, WA country football (WACFL) and Netball WA from 2014 to 2017, including the provision of balls and training equipment featuring the ‘Belt Up’ message for metropolitan and non-metropolitan community teams across the state.

RugbyWA CEO Mark Sinderberry said the partnership was an important one for clubs and the community.

“This support for our grassroots clubs from the Insurance Commission is invaluable and something we’re very appreciative of,” he said.

“For our metropolitan clubs, the provision of this training equipment allows them to reallocate funds to elsewhere within the club. For our regional and emerging clubs, it provides infrastructure and equipment that they may not otherwise had.

“Importantly, it also helps provide a valuable community service in promoting the awareness of road safety.

“Our local rugby community was saddened to learn of the loss of one of our players and his father from the Curtin University club in a road accident over the off-season. We’re very pleased to provide our support for keeping our players and community safe through the promotion of road safety.”

The WA Treasurer Mike Nahan said Insurance Commission’s funding to the ‘Belt Up’ campaign will mean $2m is invested into grass roots sport across the codes.

“The Insurance Commission has sponsored WA country football (WACFL) through ‘Belt Up’ for more than 10 years,” he said. “Now we are getting behind two of the state’s fastest growing sports in netball and rugby.

Expanding the Belt Up campaign to include Netball WA and Rugby WA helps the Insurance Commission to promote public awareness about the prevention of personal injury from motor vehicle accidents. Dr Nahan said the sponsorship will help get the message out to a large number of people at community sporting events.
