GOLD COAST SEVENS RETURNS FOR 2014
The Australian Rugby Union today announced the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens will take place on the weekend of 11-12 October at Cbus Super Stadium.
Tickets for the event – the opening tournament of the 2014/15 HSBC Sevens World Series – will be on sale to the general public from Tuesday 24 June via Ticketek (from $50 for adults and $35 for concessions).
The Gold Coast Sevens will also be the first-ever Rugby Sevens event to be part of the Olympic calendar, with the qualification period for the Rio Olympics in 2016 starting at the Gold Coast event.
It will also be the first opportunity for Australian fans to see its young, energetic side on home soil under the tutelage of new Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Geraint John.
Australian Rugby Union’s General Manager – National Teams and Rugby Operations, Andrew Fagan, said: “We’re delighted to bring Australia’s premier international Sevens tournament back to the Gold Coast for the fourth year in succession in October. It’s a place where the team generally does really well with the backing of the crowd and somewhere they feel at home.”
Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey said the event would see National Sevens teams from 16 nations hosted in Queensland.
“We look forward to welcoming the event back to Queensland this October, providing fans with a fantastic opportunity to see these international sporting stars in action and encourage visitors to stay on after the event to experience the destination,” said Ms Stuckey.
“The Queensland Government’s 20-year plan for tourism, Destination Success, outlines the importance of events such as this in driving repeat visitation to Queensland destinations.”
