The Winter Roses from Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape on Sunday won the Women’s Club Invitational Championship at the City Park Stadium in Cape Town by defeating local club the Busy Bees 20-10 in an exciting final to close off the two-day competition.

The tournament, which brought down the curtain on the 2014 Women’s Provincial rugby season, kicked off on Saturday and featured eight club teams from East London, Pretoria, Eastern Province, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and the Western Cape. The tournament was made possible by funding from the Department of Sport and Recreation.

The Winter Roses signalled their intentions early on as they registered a convincing 60-0 victory against Limpopo’s Nkowa-Nkowa and then pipped Kwaru of Port Elizabeth 10-8 in the Cup Semifinal to book their place in the final.

The Busy Bees, meanwhile, registered a morale-boosting 39-0 victory against East London’s Pelicans in their opening match and supported this with a 34-0 victory against KwaZulu-Natal’s College Rovers. This secured their final berth against the Winter Roses on Sunday.

The Winter Roses, however, proved to be the better team on the day as they secured a 20-10 victory to win the title.

Pretoria’s Soshanguve Women, meanwhile, won the Plate Final by beating the Middelburg Stormers 25-5, while Kwaru defeated College Rovers 14-5 to finish the tournament in third place. In the seventh and eighth place playoff the Pelicans registered a narrow 24-21 victory against Nkowa-Nkowa.
