EP, WP shine at Girls U16 Interprovincial Series
Eastern Province and Western Province last week stamped their authority as the top teams in the SARU Girls Under-16 Interprovincial Series in Durban as they advanced through the competition unbeaten.
The tournament, which featured 16 teams participating in three rounds of matches last Monday, Wednesday and Friday respectively, was hosted at Glenwood High in Durban.
Eastern Province started their campaign with an encouraging 15-0 victory against the Blue Bulls and built on this form as the series progressed to secure a 29-0 victory against the Leopards and a 20-0 victory against SWD respectively. While their attack was impressive, their defence was particularly outstanding as they did not concede a single point during the tournament.
Western Province had an equally satisfying tournament as they cruised to a 29-5 victory against Border Country Districts in their opening match and supported this with a 31-5 win against SWD and a 26-19 victory against Border.
With the objective of the tournament being to grow women’s rugby and to develop players for senior provincial and national rugby, the tournament is similar to the Coca-Cola Youth Weeks as no official winner is named at the end of the competition.
Hosts Kwazulu-Natal, the Limpopo Blue Bulls, Boland and Border also delivered promising performances in the tournament as they each won two of their three matches, some of which were by convincing margins.
