ABSA Currie Cup LogoThe SWD Eagles will host the Eastern Province Kings at Outeniqua Park in the final of the 2010 Absa Currie Cup First Division after both sides secured thrilling victories during their semi-final games this weekend.

The George side will play in their fourth Absa Currie Cup First Division final while Port Elizabeth outfit will make their second appearance in a final. The EP Kings conceded a 41-20 defeat to the Blue Bulls during the 2000 First Division final.

At Outeniqua Park the SWD Eagles ran in four tries during their 32-20 victory over the Griffons on Friday. Winger Joe Breytenbach added a brace while No 8 Jacques Engelbrecht and winger Baldwin McBean were the other try-scorers for the hosts. Eagles pivot Ambrose Barends kicked three conversions and two penalties.

Barends is currently the leading points’ scorer in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup First Division with 127 points.

The Griffons who held a 27-18 half time lead managed to score three tries in the match which were added by prop Kevin Stevens, No 8 Nicky Steyn and centre Charl Weideman. Griffons flyhalf Jannie Myburgh added three conversions and three penalties.

In the other Absa Currie Cup First Division semi-final the EP Kings recorded a nail-biting 26-25 victory over the Boland Cavaliers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.

The Port Elizabeth side secured their ninth win of the 2010 season as they booked their place in next weekend’s final. The hosts added two tries which were scored by scrumhalf Gerrie Odendaal and winger Norman Nelson who is currently the jointly leading try-scorer in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup First Division with nine tries. The Valke’s Coert Cronje also scored nine tries this season.

The EP Kings flyhalf Monty Dumond added 16 points with the boot after he kicked three penalties, two conversions and one drop goal. The Boland Cavaliers scored three tries which were added by fullback Jacquin Jansen, Alex Kock and winger Brendon April.

Jansen (119) who is the second leading points’ scorer in the 2010 Absa Currie Cup First Division kicked two penalties and two conversions.
