Blitzboks BokSmart Certified
The Springbok Sevens squad and management staff attended a BokSmart Certification workshop on Tuesday afternoon at the DHL Newlands Stadium.
BokSmart is the award winning SARU safety and injury prevention programme and is a joint initiative between SARU and the Chris Burger/Petro Jackson Fund.
The squad, led by captain Kyle Brown and coach, Neil Powell, actively participated in the comprehensive workshop which covered all aspects of safety, injury prevention and management as well as fair play.
Springbok Sevens star Branco du Preez afterwards described the workshop a real eye opener. “It was very informative and I learnt a lot about all aspects of the game, such as the injury prevention aspects and the treatment and management protocols. There is so much that you can learn from this fantastic course. The safety tips and basic training techniques are awesome and I definitely recommend this course to any person who has a passion for the game,” said Du Preez.
Werner Kok said he enjoyed the safety aspect of the course, as well as the different training techniques.
“The course is comprehensive and covers every aspect of rugby, from the safety aspects at the ground to the correct tackling techniques and the Laws of the Game. For instance, the front row’s binding and correct posture are explained in such simple and clear language, and I mean I am a backline player! The course is interactive and the material you receive afterwards makes it real easy for you to reference just about everything,” said Kok.
The primary aim of BokSmart is to provide rugby coaches, players and administrators with the correct knowledge, skills and leadership abilities to ensure that safety and best practices are incorporated to in all aspects of contact rugby in South Africa.
The programme not only focuses on these basic principles, but also aims to grow the game at grassroots level, and provide everyone in South Africa with the opportunity of being educated to play rugby the Smart way.
Prevention is always better than cure and with this in mind the BokSmart programme addresses numerous issues around injury prevention, injury management, rugby safety, player health and well-being and player performance.
