There is great excitement in the coastal town of Amanzimtoti in KZN. Kuswag school’s 1st rugby team is getting ready to take part in an international youth rugby tournament in Portugal. With parents and the school busy with fund raising, coaches Jaco Lubbe and Willem Swanepoel have started honing the skills of the boys both on and off the field. “It is a great honour and challenge; one that we are keen to take on. As the first South African team to take part in the tournament, there is more to play than just our school and our community. We will be playing as South Africans. With 70 teams having taken part this past year and more than 2000 players, it must certainly be the biggest school rugby tournament in the world. We are working hard as a team and want to make a good impression. We are all aware that we are not only representing our school and our province but will also be ambassadors of South Africa, and therefore we want to make everybody proud of what we achieve”, says the coaches.

As if that is not enough there is also the night series at Gelofte in Pinetown where Kuswag would like to make their mark in 2015. “We would like to do well as it sets us up for a great 2015 and if we could carry that momentum forward to Portugal it would mean a lot to the team”, says team manager Francois Herbst. He also mentions that the school hosts a rugby week where schools gather for a week of rugby, netball and hockey.

2015 thus seems to be a big year for Kuswag, and everyone is looking forward to making it the biggest year ever.” Says Herbst. Sponsors are starting to buy in and the project is well under way as more companies realise the enormous potential, but the team still needs a lot of help to make it a success. The popular rugby programme ‘Toks en Tjops’ will be doing a broadcast from Kuswag in March which will also be excellent exposure for sponsors.
