The Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens side has levelled the three-match Exhibition Series against Canada late on Saturday afternoon.

Australia lost its first match to Canada (17-12) in the opening match of the weekend at the 2014 Gold Coast Sevens but rallied in to win the second match by the same margin.

Australian Women’s Sevens captain Sharni Williams was proud of her charges efforts.

“It was a really tough battle Canada today. Canada are a really good side and always give us some tough matches.

“It was great to get the win and level the series at 1-1. We have a tough match tomorrow and it would be great for people to come down, support Women’s sport and get amongst the great atmosphere here”.

One of Australia’s latest recruits to the sport, Tanisha Stanton, playing her second Sevens match on home soil was excited to represent Australia.

“It has but it’s been amazing to play for my country, especially at home and I had a ball.
“We’ve laid a great platform down and if we stick to our game plan we should get them (in the series).”

Australia’s second match started significantly better than their early loss but a stronger Canadian attack tested its defence.

Only a try-saving tackle from Shannon Parry prevented Canada from breaking the deadlock early in the first half.

Australia fought their way into the match by wrestling some much needed possession and after a great run from Brooke Anderson, Ellia Green was able to score Australia’s first try taking the score to 5-0.

Some excellent play from the Australian backs allowed Emma Tonegato to score underneath the posts to bring Australia’s lead to 12-0.

Canada – a woman down at the start of the second half – played the way a team should a player down by holding on to the ball and scored from the kick off at the start of the second period.

Australia’s Emma Tonegato scored her second try of the match to counter Canada’s attack to take the score to 17-7 in favour of the home nation.

A late Canadian try closed the margin but the home side was ultimately too strong as the enthralled home crowd cheered them to victory.

Australia will play Canada at CBus Super stadium tomorrow at 2.49 AEDT for the chance to win the series.

Fans can buy tickets for Day Two of the Gold Coast Sevens on the gate, prices starting from $35.
