A week after announcing the contracted squad for 2015, Coach Sean Horan has selected a largely experienced team for the second leg of the World Series, in Brazil, the home of next year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Horan said after Dubai and the National Sevens, all of the players were eager to get back into World Series action. “The players have had some great game time over the summer, and the National Sevens tournament provided a great build up heading into this camp. They are now match-hardened and they’re itching to get out there. Injuries to Honey Hireme, Carla Hohepa and Alexis Tapsell have opened the door for Auckland’s Charlotte Scanlan, who was named for the first time in the contracted squad last week. She played in her first World Series tournament in Dubai last year. Horan said there was high awareness that the Olympics are next year. “We all know what the goal is. But we can’t get ahead of ourselves, and our focus has to be on performing this year, and earning qualification. We know that other countries will continue to get better – and we can’t be complacent – we have to work and play hard in every game and every tournament.” Meanwhile, Horan also confirmed that Lavinia Gould would be added to the 2015 contracted squad, having completed a two-year ban issued by World Rugby (then IRB) for taking a banned stimulant. She has been cleared to be considered for selection to the New Zealand Women’s Sevens team. “Lavinia accepted her sanction and has learned a valuable lesson. To her credit she has maintained a passion for the game, and she’s worked very hard to put herself back into contention. Given that the programme has continued to grow and develop in the time she’s been away, it shows resolve and discipline for her to come back in such good form. She had an outstanding tournament at the National Sevens and was one of the stand-out performers for me.” Brazil Sevens 7 – 8 February Saturday 7 February (NZ Sunday 8 February) NZ v Spain NZ v France World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series tournaments Dubai (won by New Zealand) Sao Paulo, Brazil Atlanta, USA Langford, Canada London, England Amsterdam, Netherlands |
