The Springbok Women’s Sevens on Sunday finished the Atlanta World Series in 12th position following defeats against Spain and China on the second and final day of the competition.

The Bok Women’s Sevens showed good signs on attack in the first half against Spain as they created three try-scoring chances. However, turnovers and mistakes at crucial times denied them from crossing the tryline.

Spain, meanwhile, took advantage of their attacking opportunities as they spread the ball wide and displayed their impressive support play, which earned them two first-half tries and a 12-0 lead.

They built on this in the second half with another two tries to secure a 24-0 lead with a minute left on the clock. A penalty, however, handed the Bok Women’s Sevens a final opportunity to earn some points, but they again failed to use the chance, which left them scoreless.

Similarly to Spain, China capitalised on their chances thanks mainly to their raw pace, which saw them cross the tryline three times in the first half for an encouraging 19-0 lead.

South Africa opted for rush defence in the second half which worked well, and they supported this with a determined attacking performance. But unfortunately they were only able to use one of these opportunities compliments of a strong run by captain Zenay Jordaan who powered her way past a defender out wide. She converted the try, leaving the team trailing 19-7.

China, however, had the final say thanks to an intercept, which earned them their fourth try and a 26-7 victory.

The defeats against Spain and China followed a tough opening day on Saturday in which SA went down against hosts the USA, New Zealand and Russia.

Bok Women’s Sevens Atlanta World Series day-two results:

Spain 24 – 0 SA

China 26 – 7 SA
