Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is a series of 12 matches, which feature the highest profile and most traditional interschool rugby rivalries from South Africa’s top rugby schools, which are broadcast live on SuperSport from March to August.

Schoolboy rugby has served as one of the cornerstones of domestic rugby dating back more than a century, and true to its slogan “Honouring Heritage. Playing for the Future”, Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools is about history, heritage and tradition. The series, now in its third year, is expected to grow even stronger.

The Mutual & Federal Premier Interschools stories are further captured in 12 Preview shows, which preview all the games and provide historical overviews of these traditional schools and highlight other academic, cultural and sporting achievements.

Paul Roos takes on Affies for their first Interschool’s derby on Saturday, 28 March. The match will be televised live on SuperSport Select at 21:00

Historic Overview

 Paul Roos Gymnasium vs Afrikaans Höer Seunskool (Affies)

On Saturday, 28 March 2015, two of the biggest names in South African schoolboy rugby face off. Paul Roos Gymnasium from Stellenbosch is hosting a rugby day as part of the school’s 150^th birthday celebrations, with old northern rivals from Pretoria Afrikaans Höer Seunskool (Affies) providing the opposition.

It is North vs South, Western Province vs the Blue Bulls, in this age old derby. These two do not have a yearly Interschools derby mainly because of the distance between them, but  they have met 17 times between 1946 and 2013. Thus it is a rare treat when the two teams meet and Premier Interschools is proud to host the 2015 version.

Affies and Paul Roos have both won 8 a piece with one draw.

Rugby at Affies

Affies is famed as one of the best rugby schools in South Africa. It has delivered many Springbok players  and continues to supply talent to the SA Schools and SA Academy sides. Affies also produced a number of current players at all provincial levels of rugby.

Affies has a huge talent pool and one that is rich in depth. There are more than 10 under-19 teams each year and as many as eight  teams per grade 8 to 10. .

Each year Affies challenge the country’s leading rugby schools such as Grey College (Bloem), Maritzburg College, Glenwood High School and KES. At these derby matches, every team gets a chance to take the field for the “Rooi, Geel and Groen”. In the last few decades Affies has produced top quality players including Louis Schmidt, Wynand Olivier, Fourie du Preez and current Blue Bulls captain, Pierre Spies (also an Affies choir boy).

Perhaps Affies’ least known star was Francois Swart, who played fly-half for Die Witbulle (the school’s first team) alongside scrum-half Fourie du Preez. The formidable duo played for the Blue Bulls and were fast becoming the next Springbok scrum and fly-half pair.

Tragically Swart died in 2004 at the age of 21and since then Affies has hosted an under-15 rugby tournament in the Easter Holidays bearing his name. The long standing legacy of Affies rugby is maintained each year and upcoming stars are still being produced.

Paul Roos and rugby are synonymous. The great man was the originator of the famous Springbok emblem and name for the South African national team. He is seen by many as the “father” of South African rugby and it is fitting that the school that carries his name is such a powerhouse.

Paul Roos has produced the most South African players to represent their country on a rugby field, with Juandre Kruger becoming their 50^th when he lined up against England at Kings Park on 9 June 2012. Their latest Springbok is fullback Willie Le Roux, who earned his test cap against Italy in June 2013.
