Western Province on Friday continued their fine form in the SARU Under-18 Girls Week at Glenwood High School in Durban as they defeated Border 22-12 in the final match to emerge as the top team in the inaugural tournament.

The Cape side was in fine form from day-one as they defeated the Golden Lions 74-0 and SWD 64-0 to book their place in the final match against Border, who brushed off the Free State and Zimbabwe respectively in the opening two rounds.

With both teams in top form on attack and defence throughout the tournament, the final match was set to be a close encounter, and as expected both teams gave everything to come out on top.

Border took a 7-5 lead in the first half as they scored a converted try, while Western Province failed to convert their try. But the Cape side found their rhythm on attack in the second half and scored three tries to only one by Border for the 22-12 victory.

In the other big match-ups the Pumas beat the Free State 15-5 and hosts KwaZulu-Natal drew 17-17 with Eastern Province, while Zimbabwe registered a 19-0 victory against SWD.

The Griffons, meanwhile, ended off the tournament on a memorable note as they registered the biggest victory of the week with their 82-0 win against the Valke.

The final round also featured a few close battles, with the Limpopo Blue Bulls registering a narrow 10-5 victory against the Lions, while Boland defeated Griquas 10-5 and the Blue Bulls and Leopards played to a 7-7 draw.
