“We weren’t surprised at how they started because they are a developing team who are getting better and better each tournament.
“It’s pivotal that we make a better start against Spain because they’re a team that if you switch off in the first two or three minutes, that could be the game.
“We need to take a look at ourselves and maybe approach it a bit differently.”
Lithuania got off to a flyer as first Vilimavicius broke a tackle to go over in the corner before Taujanskas’ quick thinking a minute later saw him pick up and go down the blindside to touch down for try number two.
Going 10-0 behind seemed to spark England into life and Cameron Cowell fired a perfectly-timed pass to De Carpentier who cantered over for the hosts’ first score of the match.
And they then took a 12-10 lead a minute before the break as McConnochie demonstrated his pace down the left to beat a defender and dot down.
Lithuania thought they had grabbed a third try on the stroke of half-time but Jonas Mikalcius’ effort was ruled out for a double move and it was England who struck first in the second period as Bibby powered his way through, shaking off tacklers to ensure a 19-10 advantage.
After Taujanskas was yellow-carded for failing to retreat ten yards, Hayter burst through the middle to put the icing on the cake and McConnochie claims England can now build on this victory.
“It’s always nice to get a try yourself but the boys did the work and I just finished it!” added the 23-year-old.
“Our main goal is to win every game and we’re still on course for that.
“But we also want to improve every game, so we’ve just got to suck it up against Spain and go again.
“I think the squad is blending really well – the boys are so welcoming. I only started six weeks ago but I feel like a part of the team already.
“Even if you’re a newcomer you are welcomed which is great.” |
