EP U19s WIN, U21s lose
EASTERN Province registered their second consecutive win in the Absa U19 interprovincial championship when they defeated the Leopards 41-24 in Potchefstroom on Saturday (July 18).
This follows EP’s win over Free State in Bloemfontein last weekend and sets them up for an interesting challenge against Western Province in Port Elizabeth on July 25.
EP led 19-0 at halftime before adding a further 22 points in the second half. Their tries came from Mabhutana Peter, Junior Pokomela, Jeremy Ward, Nicolaas Oosthuizen, Tango Balekile and Hayden Tharratt, while James Hall kicked three conversions and a penalty, and Jordan Koekemoer added one conversion.
The EP U21 side went down 28-8 against the Leopards after trailing 14-5 at halftime. The EP Kings scored first, but then were outplayed by a determined Leopards team, who scored a bonus point win. Two tries in each half, including a brace from outside centre Elden Schoeman, secured the win at Profert Olen Park in Potchefstroom.
EP’s points came from a try by Malcolm Jaer and a penalty from Simon Bolze.
Other results were:
U19: Blue Bulls 39 Sharks 21, Golden Lions 36 Free State 10.
U21: Golden Lions 36 Free State 33, Blue Bulls 24 Sharks 23.
