The Cell C Sharks team to take on the Steval Pumas
The Cell C Sharks start their 2015 Absa Currie Cup campaign with a tough fixture at Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit against the Vodacom Cup champions, the Steval Pumas on Friday.
The 6pm match will not only hopefully set a positive tone for the rest of the tournament, but also introduce a host of new faces to the team – and fans.
Three new recruits – Joe Pietersen at fullback, Wandile Mjekevu at outside centre and eighthman Philip van der Walt – feature in the starting line-up with Dave McDuling (lock) and Michael Claassens scrumhalf both named on the bench.
They all bring plenty of experience and guidance to the team, but the youngsters who now have an opportunity to shine on the big stage will have an abundance of energy and enthusiasm.
“We had a good pre-season and I am happy with the composition of our team,” said Head Coach, Gary Gold. “There is some exciting young talent coming through the ranks and guys like Stefan Ungerer, Daniel and Jean-Luc du Preez, Monde Hadebe, Khaya Majola (pictured), Franco Marais and Thomas du Toit will be given their opportunities during the course of this campaign.”
Of the Pumas, he added that: “They are a well-coached unit and are coming off a high with their win in the Vodacom Cup competition. They are always a tough prospect at home.”
