THE Lions showed why they are setting the pace in the Absa U21 provincial competition when they ran in 11 tries to outclass the EP Kings 73-14 in their clash at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday (August 8).
The Kings were plagued by poor defensive work, which the Lions exploited by running up a 21-0 lead with three tries in the opening 18 minutes. The Kings then held their own for a period before the visitors emphasised their dominance with two tries late in the first half to lead 33-0 at the break.
The Kings had a few moments to celebrate in the second half. Firstly wing Lindelwe Zungu bamboozled the Lions defence with some silky footwork to open the scoring for the home side, and this was followed by a try from scrumhalf Davron Cameron after a forward drive for the line.
However, the Lions were in control for large parts of the match as they showed by running in three tries, almost at will, in the final 10 minutes.
The point scorers were:
EP Kings 14: tries by Lindelwe Zungu, Davron Cameron; conversions by Malcolm Jaer, Davron Cameron.
Lions 73: tries by Brandan Hewitt, Jano Venter 2, Christiaan Meyer, Victor Sekekete, Bobby de Wee, Ramone Samuels, Rohan Janse van Rensburg 2, Koch Marx, Gavin Delport; conversions by Brandan Hewitt 7, Shaun Reynolds 2.
