Kings outscore SWD in friendly
The Southern Kings travelled to George on Friday where they faced the SWD Eagles in their second pre-season friendly at Outenique Park.
Despite two first half tries, the visitors trailed 12 – 13 at the break.
SWD took an early three point lead after a successful penalty kick by Leegan Moose.
The Kings managed to put a few good phases together on attack and scored the their first try on the 10 minute mark. Elgar Watts failed to convert Michael Makashe’s try but the visitors took a two point lead, 5 – 3.
SWD had an opportunity to take the lead but a penalty attempt from Moose went wide as the Kings retained a two point lead.
Moose kicked his second penalty a few minutes later as he gave his team a slender one point lead at the close of the first quarter, 6 – 5.
Ten minutes later the referee awarded a penalty try, after a massive scrum from the Kings on the Eagles’ tryline, Watts converted as the Kings regained a 12 – 6 lead.
SWD’s Christo du Plessis scored on half-time as they regained the lead for the second time in the match, 13 – 12 after a successful conversion by Moose.
Kings fullback Jurgens Visser scored the Kings’ third try twenty minutes into the second half, Theunis Kotze converted as they took a six point lead, 19 – 13, with a quarter of the game left.
SWD came within three points, after a successful penalty took them to 16 – 19 with ten minutes left to play.
Kotze kicked a final penalty for the Kings as the game ended 22 – 16 for the visitors.
