The Emirates Lions powered their way into the 2016 Vodacom Super Rugby semi-finals with an impressive 42-25 rout of seven time champions Crusaders confirming their status as one of the top teams in the competition.

While the Lions broke new ground, the DHL Stormers and Cell C Sharks could not get past their respective quarterfinal encounters.

The Lions demonstrated that their success was not a mere flash in the pan but that they have completely evolved into a new hybrid of traditional structured rugby and flair.

Some of the team’s top performers also feature prominently in the leading statistics taken from the All Out Rugby App powered by Vodacom.

Fiery Lions flanker Jaco Kriel lead the charge proving to be a slippery customer by topping the Defenders Beaten category with Patrick Osborne of the Highlanders and the Crusaders’ David Kaetau Havili with six apiece.

Growing from strength to strength, Lions centre Rohan Janse van Rensburg also cracked the top-five sharing second spot with three other players including Stormers fullback Jaco Taute, beating five defenders each.

Playing in his last game for the Stormers, Schalk Burger proved he has not lost his passion for the game.

Burger beat three defenders for a share of third place with team-mate Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Lions flyer Ruan Combrinck and Johnny McNicholl of the Crusaders.

Taute was a solid campaigner in taking the attack to the opposition leading the weekend’s Carries statistics with 16, albeit in a losing cause.

Stormers lock Pieter-Steph du Toit shares third spot with 13 with team-mate Notshe finishing joint fourth with the likes of Sharks loosies Jean-Luc du Preez and Phillip van der Walt with 12 carries each.

Taute also topped the Metres Run bracket covering 156m in their loss to the Chiefs while Lions wing Courtnall Skosan’s 94m earned him third place.

Lions players Franco Mostert, Warwick Tecklenburg and Lionel Mapoe shared fourth place with six other players in the defensive stats which include Sharks loose forward Keegan Daniel and the Stormers’ Huw Jones with 12 tackles each.
