Focusing on bringing the community closer to the team, The Sharks hosted a cracker of a Fun Day on Saturday, January 21 at Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban.

Hundreds of adoring fans relished the opportunity to get up close and personal with their rugby heroes, playing touch rugby, having rugby balls, shirts, hats and all sorts of memorabilia signed and taking pictures with their favourite players.

It was newly appointed Sharks CEO, Gary Teichmann’s first Sharks Fun Day and he could not have wished for a better turnout:

“I am very happy that the public came out here today. From speaking to the people I gather that the turnout is as good as or maybe better than last year.”

Teichmann highlighted the value of player supporter interaction, not only for the success of the team but also for the future of the sport.

“The players know that without the supporters they are nothing. Every kid needs a hero and our aim is to produce heroes. A kid getting an autograph from a Lambie will hopefully be encouraged to play rugby and so we keep growing the sport,” he said.

It was clear on the day that a healthy camaraderie and team spirit existed within the 2017 squad.

“We put a lot of emphasis on being a family and have our own values and goals. Rob (coach Robert du Preez) has done a great job and now we just need to get the results.

Teichmann said, having missed out on the 2016 Currie Cup final, The Sharks capitalised on a longer than normal pre-season and got a lot of hard work done.

“With hard work and a little bit of luck the best results normally follows,” said Teichmann.
