After seeing his side climb to an all-time high world ranking of 22 in August last year, Simba’s Head Coach Jerome Paarwater is looking at even better performances during the 2017 international calendar.
Talking to Kenya Rugby after taking the team through training on Saturday, Paarwater said,“The plan for us this year is obviously to do well, the aim is to do better than last year. Last year we lost one test to Namibia, that is our biggest challenge at the moment. Our expectations are very high, that is the standard in the Simbas.”

We need to be on another level with next year’s World Cup qualifiers in mind. No one can afford to rest on their laurels. This group of players will continue to work and we also have to look at some of the sevens players who were part of the fifteens. We still need to include them once they are through with the series. We want to give everyone an opportunity. There are a lot of test matches, that is why we have a big squad of players so that we know there is a backup. Your backup players must be as strong as your starting team. “

The Simbas, now ranked 24th globally, have a busy calendar that starts with their Elgon Cup defense away to Uganda on 10 June, before playing the Rugby Cranes in the return leg a fortnight later, a result that doubles up as the opening round of the Africa Gold Cup where they also face fixtures against Tunisia, Senegal, Zimbabwe and Namibia. They will also play a two-match test against Hong Kong in Nairobi in August.
