The Buildcorp National Women’s XVs Championship will kick off on the Gold Coast in May, continuing the road to selection for the Buildcorp Wallaroos ahead of Women’s Rugby World Cup later this year.

Eight representative teams from the around the country will descend on Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre, as they fight to be crowned National Champions, with the three-day tournament to start on Friday 12 May.

Defending champions, Sydney, will be looking to fend off the chasers from around the country with representative teams from Western Australia, Australian Defence Force, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, NSW Country and Victoria.

The tournament will have Wallaroos selectors and coaches closely watching players as they look to build a squad for the three-match tour of New Zealand in June, with Australia to play Canada, England and New Zealand.

Buildcorp Wallaroos Head Coach, Paul Verrell said: “We have seen some high-quality Rugby at the Buildcorp National Women’s XVs Championships over the last few seasons and in a World Cup year, the pressure is on all teams to put their best foot forward.

“We are looking to build a squad that we can take to New Zealand and Dublin and I encourage all players to put their hand up for selection.

“We will be looking for individuals who have done the work to improve their performance over the last year.”

ARU National Performance Programs Manager, Adrian Thompson said: “The Championship has been running consistently since 2013 and it is the first time the ARU has run the competition yearly between World Cup cycles.

“We have seen new and exciting players come out of the Nationals and we want to build on this to create more depth for the Wallaroos’ campaigns this year.

“With more younger players coming through, we may yet see the next generation of World Cup and Olympic Veterans such as Shannon Parry and Sharni Williams, putting their hand for higher Rugby honours this year.”

The Buildcorp Wallaroos will tour New Zealand in June before departing for the Women’s Rugby World Cup in Ireland in early August with their first match against Ireland kicking off on August 10.
