PORT ELIZABETH, 3 APRIL 2017 – Taking on the ultimate test of endurance requires nerves of steel and a little help, encouragement and advice from friends, which is exactly what two lucky Vodacom Red clients received in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, 29 March.

The Standard Bank Ironman African Championship took place in Port Elizabeth on 2 April and the city was a hive of activity as participants and spectators from all around the globe invaded the beaches and streets of the Friendly City in preparation for the big race.

Avid triathletes and Vodacom Red clients Richard Wright and Stacey Holland gained a huge advantage by winning the experience of a lifetime receiving expert training and advice from Ironman legend and coach Raynard Tissink in the week building up to the race. Tissink, an eight-time Ironman champion shared valuable tips for the gruelling 3.86 km swim, 180.25 km cycle, and 42.20km run with seasoned triathlete Wright and novice Holland.

All this took place under the watchful eyes of Southern Kings players Neil Maritz, Stefan Ungerer, Giant Mtyanda and Wandile Mjekevu. They were joined by famous personalities including former Springbok captain Corné Krige, fitness guru Letshego Zulu, and 5FM sports presenter Robbie Kruse.

This event was the second in a series of carefully put-together Vodacom Red Rugby Rewards experiences taking place around the country in which Vodacom is rewarding their valuable Red clients for their loyalty over the years.

“The Red Rugby Rewards campaign is exclusive to our Red clientele. Vodacom acknowledges that our rugby audience is diverse and so are their interests, which were considered when these experiences were tailored. Our goal is to exceed expectations and encourage our Red Clients to Expect More than just a contract,” said Vodacom Principal Specialist: Sponsorships, Hein Ferreira.

The unique, all-expenses-paid experience started off with breakfast at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, the home of the Southern Kings, before Tissink shared important advice, motivational tips and inspirational stories. Tissink had a receptive audience with Wright and Krige both having completed the Ironman while Kruse and Zulu each boast a half-Ironman finish. The winners could then choose from a selection of kit from the Canterbury pop-up shop at the stadium before being given advice on how best to make the transition between the cycle and run as seamless as possible. The guests for the day were divided into two teams: Team Stacey and Team Richard and raced a few laps around the stadium on their bikes before doing a run with Tissink. After lunch at the Boardwalk Hotel, Tissink gave the winners tips on the swimming leg of the race on Hobie beach. Following the ocean swim session, the winners were treated to a five-star dinner and a final question and answer session, where the participants, players and celebrities shared their own stories of overcoming adversity in their respective disciplines and careers.

“A massive thank you to Vodacom, we were really made to feel special, and it is quite something, thank you,” said Wright, who raced in his eighth Ironman on Sunday.
