The team faced a tough challenge in the Plate semi-final against the Hokkaido Barbarians in their opening match on Sunday at the Hokkaido Barbarians Jozankei Ground and went down 19-0 as they battled to match the home team physically and to use their opportunities on attack.

Their hopes of finishing the tournament on a high note in the seventh and eighth place playoff were also dashed as the Diana Barbarians dominated to earn a 22-0 victory.

The Canada Maple Leafs defeated Japan Women’s 7s Development in the final to win the title.

Commenting on the tournament SA Select Women’s Sevens coach Jongi Nokwe said: “It was always going to be a challenging tournament for us given the young team we brought over and our limited preparation time, but I am pleased with the attitude the players showed.

“The players will take a lot of lessons from the tournament both on and off the field, with the main one from a match perspective being that one has to front up physically in every game.”
