WP, SWD crowned Women’s Interprovincial champions
Western Province on Saturday ended Border’s four-year dominance in the SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Competition as they registered a narrow 17-15 victory in the A Section final at the BCM Stadium in East London to win the title, while SWD were crowned the B Section champions.
The final between Border and Western Province was hard-fought from the outset as the teams gave everything on attack and defence, which saw them enter the break tied at 5-5.
Western Province, however, crossed the tryline twice in the second half compliments of scrumhalf Felicia Jacobs and forward Charmaine Kayser – one of which was converted – to add to the first-half try by Vuyolwethu Maqholo, while Border were only able to add a converted try and penalty goal, which left them short on the scoreboard.
The defeat for the hosts marked their first of the season, while it denied them from setting new records for the most titles in the tournament and most consecutive titles.
In the B Section final, meanwhile, a strong first half by SWD in which they built up a 20-3 lead paved the way for their 23-8 victory against the Golden Lions.
SWD scored two tries to one by the Johannesburg side, while they took advantage of the opposition’s ill-discipline at times to slot over three penalty goals to one by the Golden Lions.
