Historic Overview – Paul Roos vs Grey High School

The 3rd edition of Premier Interschools moves down to Stellenbosch on Saturday 21st April 2018 when Paul Roos Gymnasium host Grey High School from Port Elizabeth. Paul Roos is looking to even the score after a very close encounter in wet weather last year in Port Elizabeth. The maroon machine seems to be firing on all cylinders this season and have yet to score less than 50 points in a match. The pre-season hype around the team seems to hold true in that they have demolished every team they have played against in clinical fashion and are unbeaten with 5 out of 5 so far. Grey High have also played 5 games and only came unstuck against Bishops at St Stithians Easter Festival. The two teams played one common opponent so far with Paul Roos beating Daniel Pienaar 68 -5 and Grey High beating the same team 72-12.

Both schools have a rich rugby tradition and play a similar style of rugby. They love spreading the ball wide, but believe the hard work must be done up front first. Recent matches between the two sides have produced some scintillating schoolboy rugby and one can expect the same standard to grace the Markotter fields come Saturday. Two current WP and Stormers teammates played against each other in the corresponding match in 2009 when Paul Roos won 20-13 in a very entertaining match. Siya Kolisi played flank for Grey High that day on Phillip Field, while 17-year-old Steven Kitshoff, still in Gr 11, packed down at prop for Paul Roos. Both players went on to become Springboks and Siya is also the current Stormers captain.

Rugby at Grey High School

Grey has a proud rugby tradition and record which dates to the 19th century.  Traditional schools they compete against, on an annual basis, are Dale College, Graeme College, Grey College, Queen’s College, Selborne College, St. Andrew’s College, Wynberg High and of late Paul Roos Gymnasium.

The first rugby match was played on the 16 September 1893 against Muir College of Uitenhage. During the years 1919 to 1923 Grey played four interschools against Dale, Gill, Kingswood and St Andrew’s. Money for the main field was donated by an Old Grey, Arthur Phillip in 1938 and thus the main field is “The Phillip Field”.

Players who represented the Springboks through the years include Fred Smollan, Fred Turner, Bunny Reid, Peter Allen, Giepie Wentzel (Master), Roy Dryburgh, Mickey Gerber, Wilf Rosenberg, Iain Kirkpatrick, Sean Povey, Luke Watson and most recently Siya Kolisi , JJ Engebrecht and Curwin Bosch.

Well known television commentators and outstanding players, like Gavin Cowley and Andrew Patterson also graced the Phillip field.

Special mention must be made of Michael Catt, Rory Duncan and Luke Watson who captained the England, Free State and Western Province Currie Cup sides respectively in 2007.

The game will be broadcast live on Saturday 21 April on SuperSport Eight from 12.50

You can also catch the build-up Premier Interschools Magazine Show from Wednesday 18 April at 18:45 on SuperSport One featuring Damian Willemse, Craig Barry, Sergeal Petersen, JJ Engelbreght.
