National Referee Squad recruited for NZ Army boot camp
The New Zealand Rugby National Referee Squad – newly formed to combine the country’s professional and top amateur referees – will assemble for their first camp in Wellington this weekend.
The 34-strong squad announced in November last year, will be put through their paces by the New Zealand Army with a boot-camp fitness session.
The session is open for vision and referees are available for interviews on request.
Attending the camp are 27 of New Zealand’s top referees, including professional referee Mike Fraser, international referee Rebecca Mahoney and 12 officials who have been selected into the squad for the first time.
Former Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay and Chiefs’ first-five-eighth, Daniel Waenga, and New Zealand Netball Umpire, Jono Bredin are among the 12 new referees in the squad at the camp.
HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series referees Lauren Jenner, Richard Kelly and James Doleman are also set to attend.

About the 2019 New Zealand Rugby National Referee Squad
The 34 National Squad referees will officiate in a range of competitions in 2019, including Investec Super Rugby (professional referees only), Mitre 10 Cup, Mitre 10 Heartland Championship, Farah Palmer Cup, Jock Hobbs Memorial National Under 19 Tournament and other domestic fixtures.
New Zealand Rugby has a goal of at least three NZ Rugby referees officiating at the Rugby World Cup 2019 and the 2019 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
