“We have been trying to build depth over the past year and that has been tested this season. We’ve got players like Vili and Scott at home and can still produce a squad with this much experience – that’s pleasing.”

Scott Curry and Dylan Collier have returned from short term injuries to bolster the forwards, while Joe Webber is set to run out in the black jersey for the first time in more than a year.

“Joe will bring a lot. He has inspired this group with the way he has trained over the last two or three months to get himself in contention for selection. Ultimately he just needs to get out there and play his own game.”

With valuable World Series points on offer, and a difficult pool assignment alongside Australia, Kenya and Fiji, Laidlaw said there was a lot on the line this weekend.

“We can’t look too far ahead; we start on Friday night against Australia and all our focus is on that. The aim is top four, the ultimate goal is to play well here and pick up valuable points.”
