A rampant FNB Maties retain top spot
FNB Maties retained their top spot with a convincing win over FNB Pukke, scoring six tries for the bonus point win at FNB Stadium in Soweto on Monday afternoon.
It was a must-win match for FNB Pukke as they did battle against an undefeated and top-of-the-table FNB Maties at the FNB Stadium in Soweto on Monday afternoon.
The match began with tactical kicks being exchanged between both teams’ kickers, looking for territorial advantage early on.
Craig Barry of FNB Maties had a try disallowed in the opening minutes of the match, when the referee adjudged an earlier pass to have been forward, but just a few minutes later he had his try. Pressure told on the FNB Pukke defence, as Barry cut inside to find a gap and put his side 7-0 up.
FNB Pukke’s Malherbe Swart’s quick thinking helped his side pull it back to 7-5 soon after that, but after that it was all FNB Maties in the second half.
A brilliant solo effort by Edwill van der Merwe from inside his own half, earned FNB Maties another nine points. Not long after that a slick exchange between Paul Streicher and Craig Barry resulted in another nine-point try, scored by Streicher.
FNB Maties led 32-5 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half and FNB Pukke pulled one back through some quick thinking by Benhard Janse van Rensburg, who scored a try for his side and pulled it back to 32-12.
But 10 minutes later a loose ball on the halfway line was kicked forward by FNB Maties fullback Craig Barry, who outsprinted the FNB Pukke defence to gather the ball and cross for another seven points.
Two penalty kicks by Ernst Stapelberg extended the FNB Maties lead to 47-12, before another display of smooth offloading set up Duncan Saal for a try in the corner and FNB Maties led 56-12 with 10 minutes to play.
The scores ended 56-12, as FNB Maties defeated FNB Pukke in emphatic fashion at FNB Stadium.
