ABSA Currie Cup Player/ Coach of the Month Award for October 2011
The Toyota Free State Cheetahs coach, Naka Drotske and GWK Griquas fullback, Rudi Vogt received the ABSA Currie Cup Coach and Player of the Month awards this morning at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The ABSA Currie Cup Coach of the Month competition is designed to acknowledge and reward coaches for their outstanding leadership and player management skills. Players, who are consistent and significantly contribute to the overall performance of the team, come into reckoning for the Player of the Month.
A media panel, consisting of respected journalists and commentators, were unanimous in their choice of the Cheetahs coach of the month of October.
Naka’s team did not lose a single match in the second round of the ABSA Currie Cup, and as in previous years, he frequently manages to coach his team to the knock-off phase of the Cup. This year was no different and to go through to the semi’s, without losing a match in the second round, is no small feat.
Naka’s biggest feat was without a doubt an away win against fellow semi-finalists, DHL Western Province at DHL Newlands, a win that basically assured the Cheetahs of a semi-final spot. Both teams were knocked out in the semis by The Sharks and The MTN Golden Lions this past weekend.
With regards to the Player of the Month, Rudi Vogt received the majority of the votes. The panel felt he played a major part in upsetting the Vodacom Blue Bulls in Kimberley and effectively kicking them out of the 2011 ABSA Currie Cup.
Players Elton Jantjies (MTN Golden Lions), Ashley Johnson (Toyota Free State Cheetahs) and Jaco Bouwer (Ford Pumas); and Coaches Abre Minnie (GWK Griquas) and John Plumtree (The Sharks) respectively, were also nominated for their fantastic performances in October.
Rugby15 was represented at the awards ceremony by Adv. Johan Jonck, Morgan Piek and our super photographer, Denese Lups.
