Absa Currie Cup Promotion/ Relegation Review
The Platinum Leopards kept their hopes of alive of retaining their status as an Absa Currie Cup Premier Division competitor next season after they secured a 37-22 victory over the SWD Eagles in their promotion/ relegation game played in Potchefstroom on Saturday.
The hosts secured their first win of the season by defeating the George side that ended the Absa Currie Cup First Division in pole position on the 2010 log. The Platinum Leopards also claimed their first haul of maximum points this year after they scored four tries against the Eagles.
The Platinum Leopards’ four five-pointers were scored thanks to braces added by fullback Danie Dames and winger Sarel Marais who competed in the Absa Under-21 Championship earlier this season. Flyhalf Clayton Durand converted all four tries and kicked three penalties to end the game with 17 points.
Danzel Manuel, Shaun Raubenheimer, Dougie Helmuth and Lyndon Hartnick were the try-scorers for the George side. Flyhalf Ambrose Barends was only successful with one conversion attempt.
The SWD Eagles must now defeat the Platinum Leopards with a bonus-point victory and deny their opponents any log points when these sides meet up on Friday evening in George if they are to advance to next year’s Absa Currie Cup Premier Division.
All that is required from the Potchefstroom side to remain in the Premier Division is to achieve two log points from their clash at Outeniqua Park on Friday evening. The Platinum Leopards are currently on five log points and boasts a points’ differential of 15 while the SWD Eagles has one log point and has a point differential of -15.
The Eastern Province Kings kept their aspirations alive of progressing through to next season’s Absa Currie Cup Premier Division after they played out an exciting 36-36 draw with the Barloworld Toyota Pumas in Witbank on Friday evening.
Ten tries were scored which saw both sides achieve three log points from this fixture. The hosts ran in six five-pointers while the Port Elizabeth side who boasted a 20-12 half time lead, scored four tries.
Province Kings captain De Wet Barry, Devin Oosthuizen and wingers Paul Perez and Norman Nelson scored tries for the visitors. Flyhalf Monty Dumond kicked four penalties and two conversions to end the game with a personal points’ haul of 16.
The Barloworld Toyota Pumas’ tries were added by Tian Meyer, Corné Steenkamp, Vainon Willis, Ronnie Uys, Allister Kettledas and Elgar Watts. Watts kicked one conversion while fullback Carl Bezuidenhout converted two tries.
The defending champions hosts the Barloworld Toyota Pumas in their second and final Absa Currie Cup promotion/ relegation match at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Friday evening at 19h05. Victory for either side in Port Elizabeth with guarantee themselves a place in next year’s Absa Currie Cup Premier Division while the loser will battle it out in next season’s First Division.
