Absa – sponsor of the Springboks – has called on all South Africans to play their greatest games by highlighting how they are positive agents for social change.

From Saturday 11 July, South Africans will be recognised for the positive impact they are making in their communities through Absa’s What’s your greatest game Springbok campaign.

South Africans are well aware of the power of sport to inspire and unite. Through their dedication, commitment and tenacity, the Springboks have played a key role in this regard.

However, through its What’s your greatest game campaign, Absa emphasises that you don’t need to be a Springbok rugby player to be inspiring or to have a positive impact on your community.

The bank’s What’s your greatest game campaign will give recognition to the often unsung everyday heroes in South Africa – parents, farmers, teachers and entrepreneurs, for example – who in their own, unique ways are making a positive difference to the lives of the people around them, the communities that they are a part of and the nation as a whole.

During the first phase of the competition which runs until 15 August, fifteen South Africans and their partners will stand a chance to win experiences with the Springboks in the United Kingdom. In the second phase of this campaign (16 August-31 October) one lucky winner will be recognised and rewarded by having a Springbok player visit his/her community project.

David Wingfield, Head of Marketing for Barclays Africa, says: “Absa is committed to helping South Africans to prosper and achieve their ambitions in the right way. This is one of the cornerstones of our brand ethos. Through this campaign we want to recognise and reward ordinary South Africans for the positive impact they are making in their own communities every day.”

To participate, visit www.greatestgame.co.za and share your story about how you are making a difference and positively shaping your community.

Members of the public can also visit one of six hi-tech, interactive pods that are available at all Springbok international matches and certain shopping centres across the country. These pods will be available at:

  • Newlands Rugby Stadium (July 11),
  • Canal Walk Shopping Centre (July 12),
  • Sandton City (July22),
  • Emirates Airline Park (July 25),
  • Gateway Shopping Centre (August 5)
  • Growthpoint Kings Park (August 8).

In appealing to the public to share how they are playing their greatest games, Wingfield says that there are many South Africans who are catalysts for positive change, often without realising it.

“We need to unearth their stories, not only to recognise some of these individuals but to motivate others to make their contribution to society as well.

“Whether you captain the national rugby team or are running a fledgling small business, whether you coach the Springboks or are a care-giver at your local hospice, whether you are running towards the try-line on the world’s greatest stage or running to catch the bus, we all share a collective ambition – to make South Africa great and inspire our nation to play its greatest game.”
