Spingbok emblemUncapped centre Andries Strauss will join the Springboks in London on Wednesday after being called up as a replacement for the injured Zane Kirchner for the tour finale against the Barbarians at Twickenham on Saturday.

Kirchner suffered a concussion and a mild elbow sprain in the 21-11 victory over England at the same venue this weekend and was withdrawn after 47 minutes of the match.

“We have alternatives for fullback in the squad in Gio Aplon and Patrick Lambie but are short on centres,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers. “Andries had a great Absa Currie Cup season for the Sharks and has played his way to this opportunity.”

The Springboks are without both of Saturday’s centres. Jean de Villiers suffered a mild groin strain in the match while Frans Steyn has returned to club duty in France. Juan de Jongh and Jaque Fourie – who had also played centre for the Springboks this season – were both unable to tour because of injury.
The revised Springbok squad is:

Backs: Gio Aplon, Francois Hougaard, Adi Jacobs, Elton Jantjies, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, Andries Strauss.

Forwards: Willem Alberts, Bakkies Botha, Keegan Daniel, Jannie du Plessis, Bismarck du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski, Bandise Maku, Tendai Mtawarira, Coenie Oosthuizen, Juan Smith (captain), Adriaan Strauss, CJ van der Linde, Flip van der Merwe.
