20 JULY 2015 – A lack of both territory and possession contributed to the Springboks’ 24-20 defeat to the Wallabies in their opening Castle Lager Rugby Championship in Brisbane on Saturday. Australia clinched victory at the death thanks to a Tevita Kuridrani try.

Statistics taken from the Vodacom Rugby App show that the Wallabies had the upper hand in some of the categories.

The hosts enjoyed 61 percent of the possession while they also had a 63 percent territorial advantage.

South Africa were lagging behind in a few departments with the Aussies making 508 running metres compared to 355 by the Boks.

In the individual statistics Australia’s Israel Folau was the top ranked in the Metres Run category.

He made 108 metres and is followed by Boks Willie le Rouz (106 metres) and centre Jesse Kriel, who ran 81 metres along with New Zealand’s Waisake Naholo.

Making 55 more Carries than the Boks which forced the tourists to make more tackles.
The Boks executed 189 tackles to the 114 by the Wallabies.

Schalk Burger led the defensive charge making the most tackles of all the players in the weekend’s two Rugby Championship matches.

The top five stats are dominated by South Africans with Burger topping the stats with his 20 tackles. Flanker Francois Louw and standout lock Lood de Jager made 18 apiece while Damian de Allende and Eben Etzebeth executes 15 each.

South Africa were superb at the breakdowns dominating the Turnovers Win stats with 13 to the six of the Wallabies.

Bok hooker Bismarck du Plessis topped this category along with Australia’s David Pocock with three each.

Bryan Habana, De Allende, Louw, Burger and Richie McCaw stole two balls each.

In the Clean Breaks department De Allende is the only South African in the top five with his two.

Australia’s Israel Folau topped the Defenders Beaten bracket with 10 while Kriel’s six were the second most.

They are followed by Marcell Coetzee, New Zealand’s Sonny Bill Williams and Kuridrani with four apiece.
