Aussie 7s name team for infamous Hong Kong 7s as veteran hits milestone

The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team has been named for the Hong Kong 7s with Head Coach Andy Friend making four changes to the squad that finished in seventh in Vancouver.

An experienced veteran, Ed Jenkins will become the first Australian to earn 50 Sevens caps, when he runs out in Hong Kong.

Jesse Parahi (facial fracture), Boyd Killingworth (shoulder), John Porch (leg) and Charlie Taylor (shoulder) are all set to make their return from injury.

Australia is currently in the sixth position on 62 points and is in the hunt for a top four position on the HSBC Sevens World Series ladder.

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Andy Friend said: “The team has come together really well after Vancouver and we have looked at the areas of our game we needed to amend heading into Hong Kong.

“Welcoming back Jesse Parahi, Boyd Killingworth, John Porch and Charlie Taylor offers us some different options in attack as we look to make the most of our opportunities in possession.

“The World Series is a marathon, not a sprint and now is the time for this team to galvanise together and put out some strong consistent performances into the back end of the season.”

On Ed Jenkins’ milestone of 50 caps for Australia, Friend added: “Ed is a true professional and leader of the Australian Sevens Squad and to reach 50 appearances for his country is a credit to his dedication and ability to the game.”

Australia’s campaign kicks off on Friday 7 April against Samoa, followed by South Korea and England in Pool A.

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Fixtures, Hong Kong 7s:
    Friday 7 April
    Australia v Samoa, 8.00pm AEST
