The Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens team has qualified through to the quarter finals of the USA 7s in Las Vegas on Saturday after winning its opening pool games against Wales and Scotland.

The Aussie 7s will meet Fiji in their last pool game on Sunday morning as they fight to top Pool D.

Qantas Australian Men’s Sevens Head Coach Tim Walsh: “We played really well in that first game and I felt that we continued that momentum on.

“I thought our defence and that ruck work were probably a highlight. We managed to build a few phases in attack which is always nice and we’re doing the simple things well.

“We’ve had some good results here (at USA 7s), we play Fiji tomorrow and we’ll see what happens from there.”

Australia will meet Fiji on Sunday morning at 6.52am AEDT with the match to broadcast LIVE on FOX SPORTS and Kayo.

Australia 28 defeated Wales 0
Australia started strongly against Wales in their USA 7s campaign with captain Lewis Holland storming over for a try inside the second minute. Wales applied more pressure in defence as the Aussie 7s worked from side to side with Brandon Quinn eventually able to break through the defence for Australia’s second.

The second half saw a Ben O’Donnell break create space in the middle of the field for Henry Hutchison to dart around the covering defence to score underneath the posts. Australia continued to dominate possession and territory with a late try to John Porch sealing a 28-0 victory for the men in gold.

Australia 24 defeated Scotland 12
The Aussie 7s opened their account early against Scotland with flier Henry Hutchison scoring next to the posts in the opening two minutes. Scotland struck back with back to back tries to Max MacFarland and Gavin Lowe giving Scotland the lead.  On the cusp of half time Jeral Skelton scored for Australia to level the scores at 12-12 at the break.

The second half saw the Aussie 7s control the tempo and flow of the match, asking significant questions of Scotland’s defence. Back to back tries to John Porch, following on from some patient back line play allowed the Aussie 7s to continue their undefeated run on day one of the USA 7s and ensure and undefeated clash to top Pool D against Fiji.
