BBRU TO HOST FESTIVAL OF RUGBY
The World Sports Betting Easter Festival will take place in Pretoria from 14 to 18 April 2022 and promises to be a celebration of club rugby.
The festival forms part of Harlequin Rugby Club’s 120th anniversary.
The leading Blue Bulls Rugby Union clubs will be in action against clubs from various provinces including the Western Province champions Durbell, the Sharks’ champions. College Rovers, as well as the winner of the Cheetahs Club Challenge, Welkom Rugby Club. Also in the mix is PE Harlequins, who recently played in the final of the Eastern Cape Super 14 club competition, whilst Impala is the reigning Gold Cup champions.
Willem Strauss, president of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, said: “The tournament will offer fantastic exposure for the participating teams and is part of the strategy that has made club rugby relevant and part of the Vodacom Bulls’ value system.
“Since we have embarked on our strategy, we have seen an increased number of clubs in our leagues in Tshwane and Limpopo. The World Sports Betting Easter Festival will create another opportunity for Jake White and Gert Smal to have a look at the best club players in our region.”
Sidney Tobias from Northam, currently contracted by the Vodacom Bulls, received the opportunity after having excelled in last year’s Carlton League competition while no less than 14 other Carlton League players from last year are now playing in various teams in the Carling Currie Cup.
“This is testament to the fact that club rugby does not only caters for the late developer, but, in many instances, also in keeping rugby alive in the communities,” said Strauss.
According to Dr Eugene Hare, CEO of the BBRU, the World Sports Betting Easter Festival will be great preparation for the participating teams with the World Sports Betting Carlton League kicking off on the 7th May 2022. All the matches will be streamed live by SEI, with a few of matches being broadcast live on SABC 2, as well.
