Bigger and better HSBC Sydney 7s to light up 2018 Australia Day Weekend
The HSBC Sydney 7s will be bigger than ever in 2018 with the tournament to kick off on Australia Day for three days of explosive women’s and men’s rugby action.
In the world first for the HSBC Sevens World Series, the men’s and women’s tournaments will be completely integrated with both tournaments held across three days on the iconic grounds of Allianz Stadium, Sydney. Both the women’s and men’s finals will be on Sunday 28 January as the best of the 12 women’s teams and 16 men’s teams battle it out to be crowned champions.
After 75,412 fans enjoyed the three-day 2017 HSBC Sydney 7s, the carnival atmosphere will reach new heights in 2018 with the tournament to be held over a long weekend for the first time, making it the perfect sporting event for the whole family, whether they’re from Sydney or travelling to the Harbour City.
For the Qantas Australian Men’s and Women’s Sevens sides, this will be an opportunity to take on the best in the world as they look to defend their home soil, just months away from the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
ARU CEO Bill Pulver said: “Sydney has embraced the HSBC Sydney 7s with open arms with the tournament going from success to success over the last two years.
“We’re delighted to be integrating the tournament into three days for both the Men’s and Women’s legs of the World Series. We’re grateful to World Rugby for working with us to make this a reality as it’s something we always hoped would eventuate, from when we first started the conversations about hosting a women’s tournament in Sydney. It’ll be great to see our Aussie Men and Women on equal footing at Allianz Stadium.
“The HSBC Sydney 7s is more than just about the amazing rugby on the field. Spectators get able to enjoy the carnival atmosphere in the stands and the live music, food stalls and family-friendly activities in the surrounding precinct.
“We look forward to welcoming the competing nations and fans to Sydney for a fantastic weekend as we celebrate everything great about our wonderful sport and our city.”
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Adam Marshall said: “The Sydney 7s will be bigger and better than ever in 2018, set to be played on the Australia Day long weekend. Thousands of domestic and international visitors will travel to Sydney for the event, providing a massive boost to the local visitor economy. The NSW Government is proud to have secured this event for Sydney, and I can’t wait to see this festival of rugby grow even more next year.”
HSBC Australia CEO, Martin Tricaud said: “HSBC is incredibly proud of its partnership with Australian rugby and the global Rugby Sevens tournament. The on-field display of world-class athletes and the excitement and entertainment in the stadium is sure to make this an Australia Day weekend to remember.”
