Blue Bulls host EP in Women’s Inter-Provincial Final
The two most successful teams in the history of the South African Rugby Union’s Women’s Inter-Provincial competition, the Blue Bulls and Eastern Province, will go head to head to determine the champion for 2011.
The Blue Bulls will host the A-Section final at Loftus Versfeld at 15:00 on Saturday, 10 September. The final of the B-Section, between the Pumas and the Leopards, will also take place on Saturday at Loftus, with kick-off scheduled for 13:15.
After finishing the season as the only unbeaten team, the Blue Bulls must be regarded as the favourites to win their fifth title since the inception of this competition in 2003. EP have won the trophy three times and these two teams have met each other in six previous finals.
Mahlubi Puzi, manager of women’s rugby at SARU, said: “The two teams have worked hard to get to the final.
“The standard of rugby in the tournament this year has improved tremendously and it will be an exciting final between two teams with very skilful players. We are looking forward to an epic battle and the display of rugby by the country’s top teams.”
The Blue Bulls advanced to the final after beating KwaZulu-Natal by 43-0 in the first semi-final last Friday. They lead 26-0 at the break and scored seven tries in the process.
Eastern Province crushed neighbours SWD in the second semi-final, played in George on last Saturday. The defending women’s champions crossed for 11 tries against SWD, who got one, as they won a one sided game by 79-5. The score at the break was 24-0
The Blue Bulls and EP played in the same group of the A-Section. Earlier in the season, the team from Pretoria inflicted a heavy defeat on the ladies from the Eastern Cape, winning their league match, hosted by EP, by 43-13.
