Boishaai win battle of Brug Street
Paarl Boys’ High 29-10 Paul Roos
In a close contest, the boys in blue overcame a half-time deficit to win an entertaining game of schoolboy rugby. Following a nip and tuck first period, the home forwards’ domination proved the difference in Paarl.
Both teams were willing to throw the ball around to bring their speedy backs into play in the early stages. Solid defence on both sides kept play on the advantage line with neither team able to gain the upper hand.
Paarl Boys put the first points on the board on 12 minutes via the boot of fullback Jean-Luc Cilliers after a penalty from the ruck. The hosts were penalized for offside soon after, following sustained attack by Paul Roos in the 25 metre area. Kristoff Baard kicked to level the scores.
Another Cilliers penalty was then cancelled out by a well worked Joshua Vermeulen try. After a line-out on their 25m line, Paarl Boys took the ball up through centre Jan-Louis le Grange, who lost possession in contact. Some quick hands and thinking by flyhalf Damian Willemse put fullback Vermeulen in the clear to score next to the posts. Baard converted to edge Paul Roos ahead.
Boishaai had an opportunity to hit back soon after, but lost the ball right on the try line due to good defence by flank Dean van Tonder. Cilliers did, however, slot through another penalty on the stroke of half-time, closing the gap to a single point.
A different level of intensity was found by the hosts after the break. Thanks in part to good tactical kicking by scrumhalf Bradley Thain and sustained pressing by their pack, they cranked up the pressure on the Paul Roos back three.
Vermeulen tried to counter attack from one such a kick and was injured in the tackle. Paul Roos lost the ball in the resulting move and Thain chipped into vacant space at the back. Flying winger Tyreeq February caught his opposite number Jason Myburg in possession, turned the ball over himself and dived over the line for a brilliant individual try. Sure-footed Cilliers converted and Paarl Boys were back in the lead 16-10.
Paul Roos then attacked with vigour, but good defence by the Boishaai backs kept them at bay. Willemse knocked the ball on in the Paarl 25m area and 8th man Khanya Ncusane capitalised to kick upfield.
Showing some tidy soccer skills, he kicked again to put right wing Nico Leonard under pressure. Leonard’s boot proved less effective and in the resulting scramble, Paarl Boys centre Manny Rass collected the ball and went over next to the posts. Again Cilliers converted to put daylight between the teams.
The juggernaut Paarl pack then took control of the match, keeping the visiting forwards occupied. Cilliers, meanwhile, slotted another brace of penalties to put the home side out of sight.
