Springbok coach Allister Coetzee was delighted with the continued improvement of the extended Springbok training squad after they wrapped proceedings on Tuesday morning in Stellenbosch where the second of three pre-season training camps took place.

The training squad of 41 players spent three days together in Stellenbosch to continue with its preparations for the forthcoming international season. South Africa will play three Test in June during the Castle Lager Incoming Series against France.

The group concentrated their efforts mainly on defence, exits and scrums, with Coetzee describing the camp as another successful training gathering. During the first camp in Johannesburg, the training emphasis was mainly on the attack.

The Bok coach also mentioned that he was pleased with the conditioning of players and attributed it in part to the continued collaboration between the local franchises and the Springbok coaching and conditioning staff.

Coetzee reiterated that the door is still open to players who weren’t selected so far for the first two camps. He also mentioned that some of the new faces invited to Stellenbosch impressed him during the various training and technical session at the three-day.

“There are many players who weren’t invited to the first camp, but who attended the Stellenbosch camp after playing consistently well to force their way into the extended group, and there will be others who will be invited to the third camp who are not here now,” explained the Springbok coach.

The Springbok management expressed their gratitude to the DHL Stormers, who allowed a few of their players to join the Bok’s training session on Monday at short notice. A large number of the invited training squad sat out the field session on Monday because of niggles picked up in last weekend’s Vodacom Super Rugby action.

Emirates Lions fullback Andries Coetzee sustained a hamstring strain during the warm-up at Monday’s Bok training. He will be further managed by his franchise medical team.

The first Springbok training gathering was held in Johannesburg while the next camp is pencilled in for 20 – 22 May. That will be followed by the announcement of the Springbok squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series against France towards the end of May.
