The Springbok Women’s Sevens got the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens off to a firing start in Harare, Zimbabwe, on Saturday, with convincing victories in all three of their matches on the opening day of the tournament.

The Springbok Women’s Sevens started off the day with an encouraging 24-7 victory against hosts, Zimbabwe, before overpowering Senegal and Namibia 39-0 respectively in a strong finish to the day.

The Bok Women’s Sevens were in fine form on attack as they used their point-scoring chances effectively from the opening match, while they put their bodies on the line on defence.

These efforts kept alive their hopes of winning the title they won in 2014, 2011, 2008, 2007 and 2006.

The tournament will conclude on Sunday, with their results on Sunday determining whether they will maintain their status as Africa’s top team.

They achieved this feat last season by advancing through the Rugby Africa Olympic Qualifier in Kempton Park unbeaten to win the competition.

“We are pleased with our performance on the opening day, but what happens on Sunday is what will count,” said Springbok Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel. “We have only been together for two weeks after our off-season break, so the players are still finding their feet, but we are pleased with the foundation we have laid in the tournament so far.

“Our goal for the last few years and going forward is to be the top team in Africa, and we will achieve that if we win the tournament. But to be the best we have to beat the best, so we have no doubt that we will be tested on Sunday. Hopefully we can build on the platform we laid on Saturday when we take to the field on Sunday.”

The Springbok Women’s Sevens will face Uganda in their opening match on Sunday, after which the final stages will be contested.
