Boland and EP take honours at Inter-Provincial Sevens
The Boland Cavaliers and the Eastern Province Women’s teams took the honours at SARU’s annual Inter Provincial Tournament held at Florida Park in Ravensmead this weekend.
The Wellington side were crowned champions after they secured a 29-17 victory over the Lions in the Men’s final. Eastern Province claimed their fourth Womens title when they defeated the Border Women’s team by 22-7. Both the Boland Cavaliers and EP wrapped up the tournament as the only two undefeated teams of the weekend.
Boland recorded victories over Free State (42-17) and the Platinum Leopards (31-7) en-route to the final. The Port Elizabeth Women’s side comprehensively defeated the Pumas (36-0) and knocked hosts Western Province out of the competition after they secured a 12-5 victory over the Cape outfit at Florida Park.
Boland’s Cornal Hendricks, who was the leading try-scorer in the Men’s draw, was named the Men’s Player of the Tournament while Border’s Sinazo Nobele received the award of Women’s Player of the Tournament. The Platinum Leopards’ Jolene Theron was the top try-scorer of the tournament with 12.
“Well done to both the Boland Cavaliers and the Eastern Province Women’s side for their achievements over the weekend,” said Mahlubi Phuzi, SARU Manager for Sevens and Women’s Rugby.
“The action at Ravensmead was of an exceptional quality and it was great to see our standard of Sevens rugby is constantly improving with the more tournaments such as these being arranged.
“I am especially pleased for the Eastern Cape as the region provided two teams that competed in the final of the Women’s section. The region is passionate about rugby and we need to assist and develop the huge pool of talent that is available in this part of the country.”
