The Boland Rugby Union in association with the Cape Winelands District Municipality, the Drakenstein Municipality and SA Rugby, hosted a gala evening of Awards and Recognition at Kronenburg Estate in Paarl on Saturday 17 November 2018.

This memorable occasion – a celebration of excellence and the honouring of special achievements and contributions towards Boland Rugby – was headlined by the Keynote speaker Alderman (Dr) Helena von Schlicht, Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality.

The programme included the annual awards of Boland Rugby’s senior professional team the Boland Cavaliers, with Tapiwa Tsomondo being named Player of the Year following a stellar debut season for the Cavaliers in 2018.

Marlyn Williams (Forward of the Year), Valentino Wellman (Backline Player of the Year) and Taine-Randall Booysen (Breakthrough Player of the Year) also received individual awards for the Boland Cavaliers, while current squad member and veteran forward Clemen Lewis was honoured as one of 23 Boland Cavaliers centurions. Lewis is also Boland’s most capped player of all time, having amassed a record 171 caps for the Boland Cavaliers since making his professional debut in 2006.

Boland Rugby’s provincial Women’s team, winners of the SA Rugby National B-Division Women’s Championship in 2018, were also honoured for their achievement this year, while the national colours received by Boland U.18 Craven Week representatives in 2018, Lionel April and Christie Grobbelaar, were also acknowledged on the night.

The highlight of the awards ceremony was the recognition that was given to Boland Rugby’s honorary guests, which included Springboks, international rugby players, officials and administrators, in appreciation for their immense contributions in South African Rugby unity.
