Border, Blue Bulls square up in Women’s Interprovincials
The only unbeaten teams in the A Section of the SARU Women’s Interprovincial Competition, Border and the Blue Bulls, will square up in a thrilling encounter in East London on Saturday in the penultimate pool round of the Series.
Two-time defending champions Border have beaten SWD, KwaZulu-Natal and Western Province in the last three rounds, while the Blue Bulls have defeated SWD, KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Province.
This weekend, however, the teams will go head-to-head in a match that could prove to be vital for their final hopes and their home final aspirations.
In the other matches in the A Section KwaZulu-Natal will host Western Province in Durban on Friday and SWD takes on Eastern Province at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn on Saturday.
In the B Section, meanwhile, the Golden Lions will go up against the Pumas in Johannesburg, the Limpopo Blue Bulls meet the Pumas at the University of Limpopo and Free State will battle it out with Boland in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
In East London Border will look to capitalise on their solid attack and defence to gain ascendancy against the Pretoria side, as they have scored an impressive 23 tries in their first three matches and conceded only four. The Blue Bulls’ defence, however, has also been effective, while they are second on the list of highest try scorers, which could set the scene for a thrilling battle.
Eastern Province and SWD, meanwhile, will be hunting their first victories of the season in Oudtshoorn. SWD have had a tough season in which they have only managed to score 12 points in three outings, while Eastern Province have secured two bonus points for losing by seven points or less. The Port Elizabeth side, in particular, come off a narrow 15-14 defeat, which will fuel their motivation to end their losing run. SWD, however, will have the home crowd on their side, meaning it could be a close encounter.
The clash between Western Province and KwaZulu-Natal is also expected to be hard-fought as the Cape side will be looking to make up for their 33-12 defeat against Border two weeks ago, while the Durban side will enter the match with confidence after registering their first victory of the season against Eastern Province. Western Province will also be motivated by the chance of sneaking into the top two on the log with an eye on a possible final berth.
In the B Section Free State, Boland and the Leopards will be looking to extend their winning runs to three matches when they take to the field.
