Border, Golden Lions women secure final berths
Border have booked their place in the SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial A Section Final, while the Golden Lions will feature in the B Section Final after both teams registered valuable victories in the penultimate round of pool matches this past weekend.
In the A Section, Border currently lead Western Province by two and the Blue Bulls by four points on the log table, with one round of matches remaining. However, as WP and the Blue Bulls face each other next week in the final pool round, the way has been cleared for Border to secure their fourth successive final berth.
The winner in the clash between Western Province and the Blue Bulls will in all likelihood meet Border the final, but the results in the final pool round will determine where the Final will be hosted.
In the B Section, three victories in a row for the Golden Lions have earned them a place in the final with one league match to go in the competition, while Free State need only one point from their final round-robin match to secure their place in the final against the Johannesburg outfit.
In an exciting round of matches over the weekend, defending A Section champions, Border, defeated the Blue Bulls 19-0 in Pretoria, Western Province pipped KwaZulu-Natal 12-11 in Cape Town, and Eastern Province registered a convincing 39-7 victory against SWD in Port Elizabeth.
In Pretoria, Border captain Zintle Mpupa, centre Aphiwe Ngwevu and prop Asithandile Ntoyanto scored tries for Border, while they added two conversions for their 19 points, while their effective defence shut out the Blue Bulls throughout the match.
Western Province overturned an 11-5 halftime deficit to win 12-11 against KwaZulu-Natal at the City Park Stadium. A brace by Springbok Women’s lock Celeste Adonis, with one successful conversion, to only one try and two penalties by the Durbanites sealed the victory for the hosts.
In the B Section, the Golden Lions defeated the Leopards 15-5 in Potchefstroom, Boland beat the Griffons 36-10 in Bronville, Free State thumped Griquas 61-5 in Concordia, and the Limpopo Blue Bulls secured a 31-5 victory against the Pumas in Secunda to close off their season.
The clash between the Golden Lions and Leopards was also gripping as the Leopards took a 5-0 lead in the first half. However, three second-half tries by the visitors sealed the victory for them.
