Border, KZN, Griquas take centre stage in Women’s Interprovincials
Border, KwaZulu-Natal and Griquas will have their sights set on extending their unbeaten runs in the Women’s Interprovincial series on Saturday as they look to build on their strong starts to the season.
In the ‘A Division’ Border host SWD in East London, Western Province go up against Eastern Province in Cape Town and Boland take on KwaZulu-Natal in Worcester. In the other clash the Griffons battle it out with the Golden Lions in Welkom.
In the B Division, the Valke meet the Pumas in Kempton Park on Friday and Griquas take on the Limpopo Blue Bulls in Nababeep on Saturday.
Border will enter their clash against SWD at the BCM Stadium as favourites with form and momentum counting in their favour following encouraging victories against the Blue Bulls and EP in their last two outings. While the East London team worked hard for their 17-10 victory against EP two weeks ago, their convincing 31-17 victory in their opening match illustrated their ability to score tries and to dictate proceedings. With their set pieces functioning well and the team high on confidence, they will look to take advantage of the fact that SWD’s last official match was in the opening round close to four weeks ago.
In Boland, the home team will have to put their bodies on the line on defence to prevent KwaZulu-Natal from registering their third successive 50-point score. Such has been the high quality of KZN’s performance the team scored an impressive 23 tries in their first two matches, while only conceding one. In stark contrast, Boland failed to score a point in their clash against Free State two weeks ago – a result they will be determined to bounce back from. However, this will require retaining possession and rounding off any point-scoring chances they create, balanced with a watertight defence.
In the B Division Griquas will also try to capitalise on their winning momentum when they face the Limpopo Blue Bulls to stretch their lead at the top of the log table. With the team boasting solid set pieces, good defence and the ability to score tries after securing a full-house of points twice so far, the visitors will have to work hard to contain the Kimberley team.
