Defending SARU Women’s Interprovincial champions, Border, showed this weekend that they could again be a force to be reckoned with as they scored an emphatic 81 points in their opening match of the season to show their class early on.

Border, who won their second successive Women’s Interprovincial title last season at the BCM Stadium in East London, cruised to a 81-7 victory against SWD at home on Saturday in a one-sided encounter, which undoubtedly sent a message to the other teams in the A Section that they mean business again this season.

In the other Section A matches, 2014 finalists the Blue Bulls defeated KwaZulu-Natal 24-10 at Loftus Versfeld, while Western Province registered a 34-20 victory against Eastern Province in Cape Town.

The first half in Pretoria was close as the Blue Bulls took a 5-3 lead at the break after scoring an unconverted try, while the Durban side slotted over a penalty.

But both sides stepped up their game in the second half, with the Blue Bulls adding two tries to their tally, one of which was converted, and three penalties, while KwaZulu-Natal scored a converted try. The home team’s superior form earned them an encouraging 24-10 victory to start their season on a high note.

In Cape Town, meanwhile, Western Province started their clash against Eastern Province strongly and built up a 24-10 halftime lead. They again found their way to the tryline in the second half despite Eastern Province trying to tighten up their defence, while the Port Elizabeth team also added 10 points to their score. Fortunately for Western Province their impressive first half set them up for the victory.

In the B Section, meanwhile, the Valke thumped the Pumas 41-15 in Kempton Park thanks to an impressive seven tries, while the Pumas scored three unconverted tries in the first half for their 15 points.

In the other match the Golden Lions thumped the Limpopo Blue Bulls 44-5.
